who authorizes 'you' to make the geocoins for this state? GCCO? or can I theoretically go make a 2008 Colorado geocoin too?

There is no authorization needed to make a coin. You could, if you chose to, make your 'own' state coin.

In 2005, MrCOGEO stepped up to the plate to create the first 'state' coin for Colorado.
In 2006, we (Team Laxson) stepped up to make the 'state' coin.
In 2007, Atwell Family came through when we (Team Laxson) couldn't/didn't want to.
It's nice to see a 2008 'state' coin being created.  Doesn't matter by who.

So far, the geocaching community has come through in creating coins for the state on a volunteer basis.

No one asked MrCOGEO, Team Laxson, or Atwell Family to make a coin.  We chose too.

When we (Team Laxson) funded the 2006 coin, we worked with the active forum readers to determine design, icon, and size.  If I remember correctly, I think we setup a poll to decide on the icon (not sure thoough).

When 2007 came around, Atwell Family asked if they could do it.  As we weren't in the position to fund it for a 2nd year, we were happy to find a financer for the project (and a nifty design!).

For 2008, Atwell Family has volunteered to create another coin for Colorado.
    Mike - Thank you.

I love the design and am trying to figure out how many I'm buying.

    Yup. Everything TLX said!

Buy it. Don't buy it. Make your own... The choice is yours.

Keep in mind that they will make a bit of profit on the coins, but that is ok. It should not be a break even venture.

I'm like you Chris. I am deciding what and how many.

    I like the design.

    Re: 2008 Colorado State Geocoin

That's what I thought, and I have no complaints. He did great job with them! I'll look for two silvers at an event soon...

I ask because the 2007 design was vetted here on the GCCO boards, but this was the first I saw of the 2008. Also, I was brainstorming an idea for a CO micro coin, but I'll start my own thread for that later.

    Re: 2008 Colorado State Geocoin

Thanks Chris for your response. I did ask for input last year and made some changes based on that. This year's coin was taken from two different artists that had designed the artwork for the Colorado State Quarter. I was not going to edit their artwork too much to fit a geocaching coin, therefore didn't vet the design here in the public. With some input from board members, I did make a few changes from the original artwork. The man on the back was panning for gold. It was changed to reflect the geocaching theme a bit more and I appreciated the input and the ability to make the change without compromising the artist original design too much.

I did show it to a few board members and get input. I also knew they where doing the GCCO coin and waited until the sale of most of those coins were complete before releasing my design. I didn't want to get in their way.

I have stepped up and made the last 2 coins with my own money, no other funding. Last year, I made a number of coins available to the GCCO for resale so they could make some money on the coins. I intended to do the same things this year. After speaking to someone at the GCCO they are going to pass. I will still make these available at events I attend as well as to event hosts.

If others would like to do a coin next year by all means do so. I work directly with the mint and would appreciate the chance to quote on any local business.

    Thanks for all your orders.

Just wanted to update everyone on this great coin that Mike did such a wonderful job on.

If you were some of the few who did not get in on the reserve list and are still wanting to get this coin, just stop by here and check out the inventory. I have partnered up with Mike to help with the coin production.
