2008 Mountain 4x4 Event - Mark Your Calendars

    Saturday, July 26th

We are doing it a little later in the summer to make sure all the high country trails are clear of snow.  This time, the official event will be an outdoor BBQ in the early evening after the 4x4 run.  Joe Friday will be in charge of the BBQ.  As before, the event will be open to all, not just those doing the 4x4 run.  As a matter of fact, some folks will probably be hanging out at the event location all day as it will be a nice outdoor mountain venue.

The tentative location for the BBQ will be at the Burning Bear Campground area off highway 285.  You can see a few pics of the area and find the location by looking at the cache page for the event that was held there on the same date back in 2003.

The the official event will be the evening dinner/gathering but folks will have the option of camping if they arrange that on their own (sites are 1st come first served/no reservations).  Some of us will go up early to grab sites to have room for the event.

As far as the 4x4 trail(s) go, that is TBD, but there are some great trails in the area.

Here is the link to last years event.

Re: 2008 Mountain 4x4 Event - Mark Your Calendars

The "planning committee" has been kicking around trail ideas and it's looking like we will be wheeling somewhere in the area around Swan River/Deer Creek (See topo map and trail map below).  This area is accessible from Breckenridge on the east, Montezuma on the north and 285 on the south.

We won't be able to determine the exact routes until we are able to check out trail conditions a couple of weeks before the event, but tentatively we will do something like this:

Moderate Group: Up Deer Creek trail from Montezuma, down Middle Fork Swan River and then up and over Georgia Pass to 285 and on to the Burning Bear event location about 25 minutes away.

Difficult Group: Up Deer Creek trail from Montezuma (possible side trip to Wise Mountain), down Middle Fork Swan River, up difficult Number 10 Hill to Georgia Pass to 285 and on to the Burning Bear event location about 25 minutes away.

Yellow Trail: Deer Creek/Saints John Loop
    Red Trail: Swan River Loop
Blue Trail: Number 10 Hill (aka S.O.B. Hill)
Purple Trail w/Red overlaid on most of it: Georgia Pass

Thanks for planning this!  Would you say the moderate trail be similar to the RMOR1 I've done in my Durango?  If so, I am very interested in trying it this year!  Depending on arrangements for my Pirates, I may have some extra seats available. :D

Yes, the contours are in meters.  I had to zoom out to the 100K maps which are in meters to get all of the trails on that image.  If I could have used the 7.5' (24K) maps then they would be in feet.  Below is a small 7.5' section around Wise Mountain.  You can see that to the NE of Wise Mountain, the trail gets up to about 12,600 feet which is one of the highest points.

Keep an eye out for these cards in a cache near you:

I placed sets of 3 in a bunch of Castle Rock caches yesterday.  If you do find them, please take one per person per cache and leave the others for someone else.  Cards are also being placed in caches in other areas.

With these cards, you will have extra chances at the Bags of Swag guessing contest which will have a special prize for the winner.  The more cards you find, the better your chance of winning.

Thanks MrCOgeo, but I want to make sure we give credit where credit is due.  Joe Friday came up with the idea and designed and printed the cards.  I am just one of several people that are distributing them.  Nice work Joe.
